What is the cost for a handyman?
Don’t let the small jobs pile up: repainting a damaged wall, changing interior door, installing new floor covering in an office, pulling joints, installing a shelf, plastering walls, setting up an indoor video system, cleaning gutters…
The list of services that handymen can offer you is long. Some people, having several small jobs to be done, accumulate them and then ask for a quote for their list.
What is a handyman?
How can a handyman help you? What does “anything” mean?
A handyman can do any job that a homeowner with the manual ability, basic knowledge and time to do could do.
The prices of handymen in Quebec City, Montreal or elsewhere in the province will be established according to the scope and nature of the work.
Price of a handyman established according to an hourly rate
Generally, the price fluctuates between $50 and $85 per hour.
However, these handymen will only come to your home if your work represents a minimum amount of time (usually 2to 3 hours). A fixed transportation cost is added.
All you have to do is add up your odd jobs.
Handyman pricing based on a hourly rate
|Type of work||Hourly rate|
|Work that does not involve construction: Touching up plaster/ Rake the ground/ Changing a lock||25-35$/h|
|Work requiring an RBQ license:||45$/h + (including travel)|
Most handymen will offer you a flat rate that includes a basic fee, that covers transportation among other things.
For example, to paint a standard size bedroom, one company charges $450 (2 coats/2 colors); the base price of $100 plus $350 for the work.
Different price factors for handyman jobs
There are 3 main factors that will vary the price, time, equipment and experience required and the complexity of the job. These different factors should be taken into account when comparing bids.
Generally speaking, if your project is going to cost more than $500 per day and take more than two days to complete, a contractor is a better option. This is because a large project often requires permits and inspections, as well as a team of workers to complete it.
While a more skilled handyman may charge more, he will be able to complete the job in far less time than a less experienced professional. The cost of a handyman will be determined by his level of experience.
The complexity of the job
The more difficult the job, the longer it will take and the more it will cost. A professional handyman should be able to notify you immediately if he or she cannot complete certain parts of the project.
In this case, you will need to hire a contractor or certified specialist. If you’re not sure how difficult the job is, be sure to ask questions of the handyman you’re considering before agreeing to hire him.
How Handymen Charge
Handymen typically charge by the hour, but some projects may require a flat rate. Some may charge for travel time, while others may add a markup to the items they purchase for your project. Be sure to ask about these factors when you request a quote.
Hourly cost of a handyman
The average hourly rate for an independent handyman ranges from $50 to $65 and around $65 to 85 per hour for a handyman who works for a company. Of course, the cost of a freelance handyman varies depending on where you live.
The size of the handyman job
In general the longer a job takes the more it will cost, an experienced handyman will be able to easily and more accurately provide you with the time and cost of a job. Depending on the job, the handyman will charge you either on an hourly basis or on a pre-established flat rate.
- Small jobs:
Small jobs such as installing cabinets, shelves, curtain poles, pictures, moldings, mirrors, air conditioner, fixing a light switch, fixing a leaky faucet etc.. When a job takes less than 2-3 hours and requires basic tools, it can be considered as a small job and we estimate the cost between 150$ and 200$.
- Medium job:
Medium-sized jobs that require more expertise, tools and equipment such as window/door insulation, deck and balcony maintenance, painting and plastering will cost more. We estimate between 300$ and 400$ for this type of work
- Large jobs:
For larger handyman services, prices can go up to $1000 maximum. This type of work can include several employees, heavier and specialized equipment and 1 to 3 days of work. It can include the repair of a floor, the repair of a partition, redo a terrace or an entrance area etc…
Above that, it is recommended to use a general building contractor

Why entrust your work to a professional?
The disadvantages of trusting your renovations, repairs and even regular maintenance to the first person who advertises in the newspaper, but is not certified or licensed, is that you will have no legal protection if they botch the job, don’t finish it, are late or charge extra.
A professional handyman will have the required certifications
- He will be registered with the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ):
Anyone who performs construction-related tasks must comply with a multitude of requirements and laws. They must also have a license from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ).
- The RBQ website gives you the opportunity to check if there are any previous complaints against this contractor.
- He will hold a contractor’s license:
According to the law, anyone (person or company) who performs construction work for a third party (you) is considered a construction contractor.
- Your handyman will therefore have to hold a contractor’s license and, what’s more, the category corresponding to the type of work performed.
- He will have a membership card:
According to the corporation corresponding to the type of work performed; he must be a member of the CMMTQ (Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec) if the work concerns plumbing and of the CMEQ (Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec), if it concerns electricity.
- P.S. CCQ (Commissions de la construction du Québec) cards are not mandatory. Experienced workers do not always have them.
